If you haven’t met them yet, Sunset Rollercoaster are a massive touring band with a highly dedicated global following, especially within the Asian-Australian community. They have performed at Coachella and Fuji Rock, and their recent collaboration album with South Korea’s HYUKOH saw sold-out dates across multiple countries.
The Release: QUIT QUIETLY (2026 RSD Exclusive Cassette) This is their most mature work to date, an 11-track journey of neo-nostalgia blending dream-pop, soul, and psychedelic rock. It is humid, melodic, and deeply universal, featuring international indie friends like Oh Hyuk, Anpu, and Leah Dou.
Here is the best part for your store: Sunset Rollercoaster will be touring Australia exactly during the RSD weekend and the RSD team caught up with them ahead of landing in Australia.
Your album QUIT QUIETLY is being released on cassette for Record Store Day 2026, exclusively across Australia, Taiwan and Japan. What made cassette format the right way to release this album for RSD?
We had already produced both CD and vinyl versions ourselves before, so when RSD approached us, we realized—oh, cassette was the only format we hadn’t done yet.
It kind of felt like, “well, we might as well complete the set.”
But the more we thought about it, the more it made sense. QUIT QUIETLY is a quieter, more intimate record, and cassette—being a format that asks for a bit more patience—actually suits that mood quite well.
So it started off a bit by accident, but in the end it felt like—yeah, maybe this was how it was always meant to be.
The past few years have been huge for the band; winning Best Band at the Golden Melody Awards, playing Coachella, and collaborating and touring with HYUKOH. Did that period influence the album or motion of QUIT QUIETLY?
Those years felt more like a very long journey.
From making AAA to touring with HYUKOH, there were 10 people on stage—the energy was very direct and full.
But when all of that ended, we went back to being just five again.
That shift was quite clear, and it made me start to notice smaller, simpler things again. It felt like we didn’t need that many layers of sound—sometimes having less actually lets you hear what was already there.
So QUIT QUIETLY feels more like a deep breath after all of that.
The album has been described as ‘a diary’ of “everyday life and fragments of ideas”. Were there any particular moments or places that became the inspiration for the songs on this album?
Most of this album was written while we were on tour.
I think my personality works like this—the more intense and tightly packed the environment is, the easier it is for ideas to come out. In those small gaps while moving from place to place, I would just capture little fragments of everyday life.
When I was making this album, I was also at the tail end of my 30s, so I did a full health check-up, like people tend to do at that stage. One of the songs, “Humor Tumor,” actually came out of that experience (laughs).
For me, that contrast—between being extremely busy and suddenly facing the reality of your own body—became the most honest background of this album.
With Record Store Day excitingly expanding across the Asian-Pacific, particularly with Taiwan joining the celebration for the first time this year, how does it feel to be part of the growing connection between the music communities across the Asian-Pacific region and your connection with Australia?
It’s an honor to be part of this project.
Music naturally moves and flows.
We’ve always really liked the music scene in Australia—it has this relaxed feeling, but at the same time it’s very experimental. Our first tour there was in 2023, and even then we felt a very natural connection with the audience.
With Taiwan officially joining Record Store Day this year, it also feels like the physical music scene here is starting to be seen by more people.
Being part of this process, we see ourselves more as something in between—a kind of bridge.
Carrying a certain kind of romance from the Asia-Pacific, and slowly letting it drift across the ocean toward Australia.
Record Store Day supports the local community music scenes, the stores, artists, and discovering new music. Do you have any memories of discovering new music in record stores?
One time, I was browsing at a record store in Taipei called Waiting Room, and I came across an album released by Music From Memory—it was Clouds by Gaussian Curve.
I still listen to that album very often to this day.
You are set to come to Australia and play shows in Sydney and Melbourne, right in time for RSD! Will you be checking out any stores while you’re here?
It might be a bit of a pity this time, since we have back-to-back shows—Sydney on the 17th and Melbourne on the 18th—and we’ll need to move immediately after each show.
But I’ve heard there are many unique independent record stores in Australia, so next time we come, we’ll definitely make time to explore them.
How are you planning to celebrate the release of QUIT QUIETLY on cassette for RSD 2026?
It just so happens that we’ll be playing our QUIT QUIETLY headline show in Melbourne that day.
So if you pick up the cassette, you’re more than welcome to come join us at the show—it can be like an extended version of Record Store Day
If the band owned a record store, which band member would be the DJ in charge of the daily record spins?
We’d probably take turns, so everyone can share their own personal taste in music.
But Friday nights would be perfect for handing things over to Hao-Ting—aka “SAX MACHINE”—for a full saxophone set. His solo album SAX TAPE came out last year, and it’s really great. Highly recommended.
What’s next for 落日飛車 Sunset Rollercoaster?
We’ll continue touring for now, while slowly working on new music.
There’s no specific place we’re aiming for or a particular direction we’re trying to become, it’s more about following the current flow and seeing where it takes us.
Ask your favourite Indie Store is they’ll be stocking the QUIT QUIETLY cassette.
